Description
A first UK edition of Among Animals of Africa (1970), an illustrated work of African natural history by Bernhard Grzimek (1909–1987), the celebrated German zoologist, wildlife conservationist and pioneering documentary filmmaker. One of the most influential figures in twentieth-century wildlife conservation, Grzimek played a central role in drawing international attention to the extraordinary biodiversity of Africa and the growing threats facing its animal populations. The book reflects his extensive experience of African wildlife and his lifelong commitment to the study, understanding and protection of animals.
Bernhard Grzimek: Zoologist and Conservation Pioneer
Bernhard Grzimek was born in 1909 and trained as a veterinarian before becoming one of Germany’s most prominent zoologists and wildlife conservationists. In 1945, he became director of Frankfurt Zoo, a position he held until 1974. Under his leadership, the zoo developed an international reputation for animal welfare, zoological research and conservation. Grzimek believed that zoological institutions had an important responsibility beyond the exhibition of animals. He advocated the protection of wild populations and their natural habitats, recognising that many species could not survive without coordinated international conservation efforts. His interests increasingly centred on Africa, where he undertook numerous expeditions to study wildlife and investigate the challenges posed by hunting, habitat loss and expanding human settlement.
Through his books, films, television programmes and public campaigning, Grzimek helped establish wildlife conservation as an issue of international importance.
Among Animals of Africa
Published in Britain by Collins in 1970, Among Animals of Africa brings Grzimek’s experience as a zoologist and conservationist to a wider readership.
The book reflects his fascination with African animals, combining natural-history observations with personal encounters and an appreciation of the complex relationships between wildlife, habitat and human activity. Grzimek’s writing is informed by decades of direct experience in the field and by his conviction that wildlife protection depends upon scientific understanding as well as public support. The work belongs to an important period in the development of modern conservation literature, when increasing awareness of environmental pressures encouraged a fundamental reassessment of humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
It will appeal to readers interested in African wildlife, zoology, natural-history photography, conservation history and the early development of international environmental protection.
Condition
A near fine, tight, clean copy in a very good plus dustwrapper. The binding is nice and tight, and the pages are nice and clean. The original photographic, price-clipped dustwrapper is slightly faded, creased and rubbed, but remains attractive, with the photographic illustrations and typography clearly preserved. The dustwrapper is now protected in an easily removable clear acetate archival wrapper.
