A striking original black-and-white press wirephoto showing Christopher Reeve as Superman stretched across a damaged section of railway track in Richard Donner’s landmark 1978 film Superman.

Reeve is shown in full costume, lying between the rails with one arm extended and the other gripping a displaced section of track. His concentrated expression, outstretched hands and low physical pose create an unusually dramatic image, while the converging rails and sleepers lend the composition a strong sense of danger and momentum.

The original contemporary newspaper caption attached to the reverse reads:

“Superman to the rescue… Christopher Reeve stars in Superman (A) with Marlon Brando and a host of other stars in this spectacular film now showing at the ABC, South Shields.”

The reverse bears the archive date 13 December 1978—one day before the film’s official UK release on 14 December 1978. This exceptionally close dating places the wirephoto at the very beginning of the film’s original British exhibition and suggests that it was prepared for immediate local newspaper coverage as the picture opened at the ABC Cinema in South Shields. The film opened in the United States the following day, 15 December.

This near-release provenance gives the photograph considerably greater documentary interest than a later library reissue. It is a contemporary publicity image circulated while British audiences were first encountering Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman, rather than a retrospective photograph selected after the film had become established as a classic.

Directed by Richard Donner, Superman featured Christopher Reeve alongside Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder. Reeve’s performance combined physical authority as Superman with an intentionally contrasting, awkward portrayal of Clark Kent, establishing one of the most enduring screen interpretations of the character. The BFI records the film as a 1978 production directed by Donner and featuring Reeve, Brando and Hackman.

The photograph is especially appealing because it shows Reeve in full costume within an action setting rather than in a routine studio portrait. The damaged railway track, direct gaze and forceful composition capture both the spectacle of the film and the physical conviction Reeve brought to the role.

The reverse retains its original pasted caption, Shields Gazette photographic-library stamp, archive date and extensive manuscript crop measurements and production markings. These features establish the item as an authentic working newspaper wirephoto from the film’s original release period.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press wirephoto. There is light overall toning, minor surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Slight edge and corner wear is present, together with several small marginal creases and pressure marks. A black transmission or editorial line runs along the lower edge of the image.

The reverse displays age-related toning, manuscript crop measurements, editorial lines, adhesive residue and the original pasted caption. The Shields Gazette Library stamp and archive date remain visible, although partly obscured by the newsroom markings.

The image retains strong contrast and good definition, with Reeve’s face, costume, hands and the railway setting clearly recorded.
