Description

A powerful original Associated Press radiophoto showing a Vietnamese refugee family carrying virtually all its remaining possessions while fleeing fighting along Route 1 near Xuân Lộc during the final weeks of the Vietnam War.

The image centres upon a barefoot woman walking along a rural road beneath a heavily laden carrying pole. Large baskets suspended at either end contain bedding, cooking vessels, household goods and other essential possessions. A young child walks beside her carrying a smaller shoulder pole with water containers, while another family member follows behind beneath a conical hat and an additional load.

The family’s improvised transport and extensive burden provide an immediate visual account of civilian displacement. Their possessions are not packed for an organised journey but gathered into baskets, containers and bundles suitable for carrying on foot. The woman’s posture, the child’s participation and the open agricultural landscape combine to create a particularly eloquent record of a family forced to leave its home as combat moved towards the area.

The contemporary Associated Press caption printed vertically along the right margin is headed “ON THE MARCH” and reads:

“NEAR XUAN LOC, VIETNAM, APRIL 9—All its valuable possessions carried on poles and in baskets, a family flees fighting along Route 1 in a contested area east of Saigon Wednesday. The fighting forced villagers in the area to seek safety nearer Xuan Loc town.”

The photograph dates from 9 April 1975, the opening day of the Battle of Xuân Lộc, one of the final major engagements fought by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam before the collapse of South Vietnam. Located east of Saigon on Route 1, Xuân Lộc occupied a strategically important position on the principal approach to the capital. Fighting in and around the town displaced local communities and drove civilians towards areas believed to offer greater safety.

The photograph is especially valuable as a civilian counterpart to military images of the battle. Rather than concentrating upon soldiers, armour or artillery, it records how the advance of the fighting affected an ordinary rural household. The family’s carrying poles, baskets, bedding and water containers preserve considerable detail about the practical realities of displacement.

The print was produced as an AP Radiophoto, electronically transmitted for rapid use by subscribing newspapers. The reverse bears the archive stamp of the Shields Gazette Library and a receiving or filing date of 13 April 1975, confirming its provenance within a British regional newspaper picture archive.

Condition

Good condition for an original working newspaper photograph. There is light overall toning, minor surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Small marginal creases and pressure marks are present, including slight creasing near the upper edge and corners. Contemporary crop indicators or broken editorial lines run along the upper margin.

The transmitted Associated Press caption remains substantially complete and clearly legible along the right side. The reverse displays light age toning and minor handling marks, together with the Shields Gazette Library stamp and receiving date of 13 April 1975. The principal image remains clear and strongly contrasted, with good detail throughout the figures and their possessions.
