Description

A powerful original Associated Press wirephoto showing wounded South Vietnamese soldiers pausing during evacuation from the battlefield near Xuân Lộc in the final weeks of the Vietnam War.

The closely framed photograph presents three young Army of the Republic of Vietnam soldiers bearing visible injuries. The central serviceman wears camouflage uniform and has an improvised bloodstained bandage wrapped across his lower face and jaw. Beside him, another soldier has extensive dressings around his neck, shoulder and upper arm, with his torn uniform revealing further bandaging. A third wounded man stands partly obscured behind them.

The soldiers appear exhausted and disoriented but remain on their feet as they make their way towards an aid station. Their injuries, field uniforms and close physical grouping create an unusually direct account of the individual cost of the fighting, distinct from more distant images of troop movements, armour or artillery.

The contemporary Associated Press caption printed vertically along the left margin is headed “HUMAN COST” and reads:

“XUAN LOC, Vietnam, April 18 — These South Vietnamese troopers, wounded in battle Thursday near Xuan Loc, pause on their way to an aid station. Government troops had held their ground under recent North Vietnamese attacks in the area on Route 1.”

The photograph was transmitted on 18 April 1975. As the caption records that the soldiers were wounded in battle on Thursday, the depicted evacuation followed fighting on 17 April 1975.

The Battle of Xuân Lộc had begun on 9 April with a major North Vietnamese artillery, rocket and mortar bombardment against the strategically important road junction of Routes 1 and 20. South Vietnamese forces mounted a determined defence, temporarily holding their positions despite repeated assaults and the arrival of additional North Vietnamese formations.

By 18 April the battle had become the last major organised defensive action undertaken by South Vietnam before the final advance upon Saigon. Xuân Lộc’s position on Route 1 made it a critical obstacle on the eastern approach to Biên Hòa and the capital. The defence was ultimately bypassed and the South Vietnamese withdrawal began several days later; Saigon fell on 30 April 1975.

This image is particularly effective because it records neither battlefield spectacle nor anonymous casualties lying at a distance. Instead, it presents the wounded soldiers at close range, still conscious and moving towards medical treatment. The title “Human Cost” accurately reflects the photograph’s concentration upon physical injury and endurance during the collapse of South Vietnam.

The lower transmission line identifies the image as an Associated Press radiophoto routed through Hong Kong and London for newspaper distribution. The reverse bears the Shields Gazette Library stamp and a receiving date of 18 April 1975, confirming its provenance as a contemporary working newspaper photograph.

Condition

Fair to good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general age-related toning, surface marking and newsroom handling wear. The reverse displays pronounced uneven toning and staining, particularly across the lower portion, with minor edge wear and small handling creases.

The front has several marginal creases and slight corner wear. Contemporary black editorial border and crop lines appear around the image, together with transmission markings. The caption remains substantially complete and legible. Despite the evident archival use, the principal image remains clear and strongly contrasted, with the soldiers’ faces, wounds and bandaging well defined.
