CHURCHILL, Winston S – Signed photographic postcard portrait – c. Early 1930s
London: Walter Thomas, 147 New Bond Street, [c. early 1930s].
Original photographic postcard portrait of Winston S. Churchill seated at his desk, boldly signed by Churchill in blue fountain pen ink across the lower portion of the image.
The portrait depicts Churchill in profile, pen in hand, seated within a writing interior, making it an especially evocative and visually successful signed image. Published by the noted London photographer Walter Thomas of New Bond Street, the photograph belongs to a recognisable series of inter-war Churchill portrait postcards which were frequently acquired for autograph purposes during political meetings, public appearances, and literary events.
The autograph is highly characteristic of Churchill’s mature public signing style. Executed in flowing blue fountain pen ink with a broad nib, the signature displays the rapid and practised movement associated with Churchill’s authentic signed photographic material of the interwar period. The sweeping formation of “Winston”, the compact but fluid “S.”, and the strongly underlined concluding flourish beneath “Churchill” are all entirely consistent with examples signed quickly in public or semi-public settings.
Particularly notable is the natural interaction between the fountain pen ink and the photographic postcard surface. Slight variation in ink density and pressure is consistent with a broad fountain pen signing upon semi-gloss photographic stock, where ink frequently sits unevenly before drying. Such features are commonly encountered in authentic Churchill signed postcards and differ markedly from the slow, hesitant line quality often associated with later imitations.
Churchill was well known for signing rapidly, often whilst standing, moving between engagements, or working through large quantities of requested autographs. Signed photographic postcards such as the present example were especially popular during the interwar years and remain among the most visually desirable forms of Churchill autograph material.
The postcard retains its unused divided back with printed stamp box and publisher’s credit: “Walter Thomas, 147 New Bond St. W.1.” Size approximately 13.1 x 8.4 cm.
Provenance is particularly strong. The postcard originates from material de-accessioned from the celebrated Steve Forbes Collection of Winston S. Churchill with the associated Steve Forbes Collection code: SFC: SOL12. The Forbes Churchill holdings were widely regarded within the antiquarian and autograph trade as one of the most important private Churchill collections assembled in modern times, comprising books, manuscripts, signed photographs, correspondence, and historical material collected over several decades.
Hornseys’ are also pleased to note that we currently hold a substantial group of additional material originating from the Forbes Churchill collection, including a significant body of ephemera and research material formerly belonging to the noted American Churchill collector Robert P. Hastings, whose Churchilliana was later acquired by Steve Forbes. Included within this archive are original letters and correspondence between Hastings, the Grolier Club and the distinguished autograph and manuscript dealer Kenneth W. Rendell concerning Churchill exhibition material, propaganda leaflets, and collecting activities during the early 1990s. Such accompanying archival material provides an unusually strong contextual provenance framework for the wider Forbes-Hastings Churchill material.
Condition: Light surface wear and minor handling marks consistent with age. The image remains sharp and well contrasted, while the signature is bold, highly legible, and visually striking. Very good indeed.
A fine signed Churchill photographic postcard combining strong visual presentation, desirable inter-war portraiture, important Forbes provenance, and a characteristic fountain pen autograph.
