(IRELAND) Autograph Note Signed (“Argyll”) concerning the Tipperary Trials and Irish Government policy – Inveraray – 28 September 1890

Autograph letter signed, one page. 17.7 × 11.4 cm.

An interesting Irish political letter from George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, Liberal Unionist statesman, author and former Secretary of State for India, referring explicitly to the contemporary Tipperary Trials, one of the most widely discussed Irish political controversies of the late Victorian period.

Writing from Inveraray, Argyll states that he has already expressed the opinions he is able to offer on the matter and goes on to defend the Government’s position, remarking that he sees:

“no mystery about the Government endeavouring to protect the liberty of the subject.”

The letter was written during the closing phase of the Irish Land War and amid the controversies surrounding the Plan of Campaign, agrarian agitation and a series of highly publicised legal proceedings in County Tipperary. The Tipperary Trials became a focal point in contemporary debates concerning coercion, civil liberties, tenant rights, public order and the administration of justice in Ireland.

Argyll’s comments are particularly noteworthy in light of his position as a leading Liberal Unionist. Having broken with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule, he was among the most prominent opponents of constitutional separation and frequently intervened in debates concerning Irish governance and public policy. The present letter illustrates the extent to which questions arising from the Tipperary prosecutions were viewed not merely as local disputes but as matters touching fundamental constitutional principles, including the Government’s responsibility to uphold law and protect individual liberty.

George Douglas Campbell served as Postmaster General, Lord Privy Seal and Secretary of State for India, and was one of the most influential political writers and public intellectuals of the Victorian era. His views on Ireland, Home Rule and constitutional government were widely discussed throughout the final decades of the nineteenth century.

Apparently unrecorded.

Condition: Folded as sent, with light creasing and minor handling wear. Very good condition overall.

A concise but historically significant Irish political letter concerning the Tipperary Trials, Government policy and late Victorian debates over law, liberty and the Irish Question.
