NORTHUMBERLAND ELECTION BROADSIDE – SONG. TUNE – “WHITE COCKADE” – “BEAUMONT FOR EVER” – Newcastle, 1826
Newcastle: Mitchell, Printer, [1826].
Single printed broadside. Folio. Approximately 27.5 x 22.0 cm.
A rare surviving election song broadside issued during the celebrated Northumberland Parliamentary election of 1826, supporting the candidature of Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (1792–1848), one of the principal contenders in one of the most fiercely contested county elections of the Georgian period.
Printed as a campaign song intended to be sung to the well-known air “White Cockade”, the broadside exemplifies the important role played by music, performance and popular culture in nineteenth-century electoral politics. Election songs formed a highly effective means of spreading political messages amongst large audiences, particularly at public meetings, processions, taverns and hustings.
The text repeatedly invokes Beaumont’s name and political principles, urging supporters to rally beneath the symbolic white cockade:
“Mount the white cockade, ye men of Tyne!”
and
“Beaumont for ever” be our constant cry.
The song presents Beaumont as a candidate of independence and political integrity, praising his “pure and unsoil’d” principles and portraying him as standing above factional politics. Particularly noteworthy is its appeal to liberty and reformist sentiment, describing the white cockade as:
“Freedom’s badge”.
The broadside offers valuable evidence of the sophisticated electioneering methods employed during the Northumberland contest. Political songs were designed not merely as entertainment but as powerful instruments of persuasion, enabling campaign messages to be memorised, repeated and disseminated throughout the electorate.
The 1826 election generated a remarkable body of printed ephemera including addresses, squibs, poems, songs and handbills. Such material was intended for immediate use during the campaign and consequently survives far less frequently than formal political publications. Election songs are especially desirable, preserving both the political rhetoric and popular culture of the period.
Thomas Wentworth Beaumont was among the most influential political figures in Northumberland during the early nineteenth century, and surviving campaign material associated with his candidature remains highly sought after by collectors of parliamentary history, Northumbriana, political ephemera and Georgian print culture.
No separate institutional record for this specific item has been traced. While collections of Northumberland election ephemera survive in major repositories and archives, no separately catalogued institutional record for this particular broadside has been identified during research.
An attractive and uncommon survival from the vibrant world of Georgian electioneering, combining political history, popular song and regional printing in a single ephemeral publication.
