A scarce and historically significant Northumberland election broadside issued by Henry Thomas Liddell following the fiercely contested Northumberland parliamentary election of 1826. Dated Farnacres, 11 March 1826, and printed in Newcastle by T. & J. Hodgson, the broadside forms part of the remarkable body of election literature generated during one of the most expensive and politically charged county contests of the early nineteenth century.
The text is a dignified public address issued shortly after Liddell’s withdrawal from the contest. Rather than attacking his opponents, Liddell thanks his supporters for their “warm and zealous Support” and reflects upon the circumstances that prevented him from continuing the campaign. Most notably, he acknowledges that he has “resigned my own Cause from Deficiency of Means to prosecute it,” an unusually candid admission that illustrates the immense financial burden associated with county elections before the Reform Act.
The document provides valuable contemporary evidence for the realities of Georgian electoral politics. Northumberland elections were fought across a vast county electorate and required extensive canvassing, travel, public meetings, hospitality, printing, and organisational expenditure. Liddell’s statement offers a rare first-hand acknowledgement of the financial pressures that could determine the outcome of a parliamentary campaign.
Beyond its local significance, the broadside is an important primary source for historians of electoral culture, parliamentary reform, political patronage, and the operation of county politics in the years immediately preceding the Reform Act of 1832. It also sheds light on the career of Henry Thomas Liddell, later a prominent member of the Northumberland landed elite and a figure associated with the county’s complex political rivalries.
Institutional holdings for Northumberland election broadsides survive in collections such as the British Library and Northumberland Archives. However, I have not located a separately catalogued institutional record for this specific broadside, and it appears considerably scarcer than many of the better-known election addresses and poll publications of the period.
An attractive survival from a highly important county election and an excellent example of early nineteenth-century political ephemera.
Condition: Near fine condition. Printed broadside on a single sheet. Fold creases present. Light age toning and minor handling wear only. A particularly clean and well-preserved example of a fragile piece of election ephemera.
