NORTHUMBERLAND ELECTION BROADSIDE – To The Freeholders Of Northumberland – Morpeth, Feb. 8th, 1826
Alnwick: Smith, Printer, 1826.
Single-sheet election broadside, printed on one side only. Folio (22.5 x 27.4 cm).
Condition: Near fine. Fold creases. Light age toning and minor signs of handling. A notably clean and well-preserved example of a scarce provincial election broadside.
An apparently unrecorded Northumberland election broadside of considerable political interest, issued during the fiercely contested county election of 1826 and signed in print by Charles Loraine of Kirkharle.
The broadside was produced amid one of the most acrimonious electoral struggles in early nineteenth-century Northumberland politics, a contest which pitted supporters of reform-minded and independent candidates against established county interests. It addresses accusations exchanged during the campaign and centres upon the conduct of Henry Thomas Liddell (later 1st Earl of Ravensworth), one of the principal candidates in the election.
Loraine’s letter seeks to rebut allegations concerning opposition to Mr Bell and reproduces in full two pieces of private correspondence exchanged between himself and Liddell in February 1826. These letters are printed as documentary evidence intended to demonstrate the chronology of events and to challenge statements made during the election campaign.
The document provides a valuable contemporary insight into the mechanics of Georgian electoral politics, illustrating the extent to which private correspondence, public reputation, newspaper reports and printed handbills were deployed as political weapons. Such ephemeral publications were designed for immediate distribution among freeholders and voters and were rarely intended to survive beyond the election itself.
Northumberland elections during this period were among the most expensive and closely fought county contests in Britain. Printed broadsides such as the present example formed an essential component of campaign strategy, allowing candidates and their supporters to circulate arguments rapidly across a geographically extensive electorate.
The broadside is particularly notable for preserving both sides of a political correspondence that might otherwise have disappeared. As such it offers primary evidence for the conduct of the 1826 election and the relationships between some of its principal participants.
Institutional Records
Research confirms institutional holdings relating to the wider body of 1826 Northumberland election ephemera, including collections preserved by repositories such as the British Library and regional archival institutions.
However, no separate institutional record for this specific item has been traced. While related election broadsides from the same campaign survive in institutional collections, this particular printing appears absent from standard online catalogues and may therefore represent a rare or potentially unrecorded survival.
Historical Significance
The Northumberland election of 1826 occurred during a period of profound political change in Britain. Questions surrounding Catholic Emancipation, parliamentary reform, aristocratic influence and electoral independence dominated public debate. County elections generated a vast output of ephemeral literature, much of which was discarded immediately after use.
Consequently, surviving broadsides constitute an important body of primary-source material documenting popular political culture, campaign tactics and local political networks in the years immediately preceding the Reform Act of 1832.
The present broadside stands as a rare surviving witness to the conduct of one of Northumberland’s most significant nineteenth-century electoral contests.
