Superman – Christopher Reeve “In Human Guise” – Original Press Photograph – 1982

Description

An appealing original black-and-white press photograph of Christopher Reeve, photographed away from the Superman costume in a relaxed and informal portrait.

Reeve is shown smiling broadly, resting one arm across the foreground while placing his other hand behind his neck. Wearing a short-sleeved striped polo shirt, he appears notably different from the formal, heroic publicity images most closely associated with his portrayal of Superman. The natural expression and casual pose create a warm and engaging portrait of the actor at the height of his international fame.

The original newspaper caption attached to the reverse reads:

“In human guise, superstar Superman Christopher Reeve.”

The wording deliberately contrasts Reeve’s familiar screen identity with this candid-looking portrait of the actor out of costume. It provides a concise contemporary record of how strongly Reeve had become identified with Superman by the early 1980s.

The reverse bears newspaper archive stamps dated 28 July 1982 and 30 July 1983. The earlier date provides the first surviving documentary date for the photograph within the archive, while the later stamp indicates that it was retrieved or reused approximately a year afterwards. Manuscript crop dimensions and publication instructions show that the photograph was handled as a working newspaper image.

By 1982, Reeve had appeared as Superman in Richard Donner’s Superman and Richard Lester’s Superman II. His combination of physical assurance, sincerity and understated humour had made him internationally recognisable, while the contrast between Superman and the deliberately awkward Clark Kent became central to his performance. This portrait is particularly effective because it presents Reeve without costume, character or studio spectacle, yet the surviving caption shows that newspapers still introduced him primarily through the role.

The image has strong crossover appeal for collectors of Christopher Reeve, Superman memorabilia, film photography and early-1980s popular culture. Unlike a modern reproduction, this is a genuine physical press photograph carrying its original caption, archive dates and newsroom markings.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general age-related toning, most noticeably within the pale margins and background, together with minor surface marking and ordinary newsroom handling wear. The sheet has gentle curvature, slight edge and corner wear and several small pressure marks.

The portrait remains clear and well contrasted, with strong facial detail and good definition throughout Reeve’s hair, clothing and expression.

The reverse displays light toning, manuscript crop lines and measurements, archive stamps dated 28 July 1982 and 30 July 1983, the original pasted caption and minor traces of handling and former newsroom use. These contemporary working marks form an integral part of the photograph’s history.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
