Product Description
Associated Press Wire Photograph – Cambodian Orphaned Infants in Thai Refugee Camp Hospital – 1979
Description
An original Associated Press wire photograph documenting the Cambodian refugee crisis of 1979.
The image shows young orphans in a Cambodian refugee camp hospital in Thailand, watched over by volunteer workers. The accompanying Associated Press caption identifies the children as Cambodian infants who were orphaned during the crisis and placed in a special area within the camp hospital.
The photograph belongs to the wider humanitarian aftermath of the Khmer Rouge period, when large numbers of Cambodian civilians fled into Thailand seeking food, medical care and safety. Images such as this were distributed internationally by news agencies and helped communicate the scale of displacement, illness and child vulnerability that followed years of war, famine and political violence.
As an original Associated Press wire photograph, this is both a contemporary news image and a primary historical document. The photograph survives with archive provenance from the Shields Gazette, retaining period newsroom markings and handling characteristics.
