Product Description
Banias – Iraq Petroleum Company Limited – Sea Terminal of the Kirkuk–Banias Pipeline – 1952
Produced by Newman Neame Maps Ltd., London and printed in Great Britain, November 1952. Large-format pictorial promotional map issued for the Iraq Petroleum Company Limited, illustrating the Mediterranean port and oil terminal facilities at Banias on the Syrian coast.
Colour-printed in a bold post-war modernist style, the map depicts the sea terminal of the 30-inch pipeline from Kirkuk together with storage installations, harbour works, pumping facilities, administrative buildings and surrounding agricultural landscape. The eastern Mediterranean coastline is shown with shipping lanes extending offshore, whilst inset vignette illustrations highlight important industrial and civic structures associated with the development of the terminal.
The design is highly characteristic of mid-century commercial cartography, combining diagrammatic clarity with decorative pictorial elements. Produced only a few years after the completion and expansion of the Kirkuk–Banias pipeline system, the map documents one of the most strategically important petroleum infrastructures in the Middle East during the early Cold War period. Material relating to the Iraq Petroleum Company is increasingly sought after, particularly pieces connected with Levantine oil transport and the geopolitical development of Syria and Iraq in the twentieth century.
The lower margin bears the printed imprint: “Produced by Newman Neame Maps Ltd London and printed in Great Britain November 1952”.
Original colour lithograph.
Sheet size: 95.4cm x 60cm.
Condition: Folded as issued. A very good indeed, clean example with light handling wear and original fold lines. Colours fresh and attractive throughout. An excellent display piece and an uncommon survival of corporate petroleum cartography from the early 1950s.
