Product Description
BARTHOLOMEW’S WORLD SURVEY SERIES – South Eastern Australia – c.1922
John Bartholomew & Son Ltd., Edinburgh Geographical Institute, c.1922.
Large colour-printed folding map of south-eastern Australia, mounted on cloth as issued and preserved in the original printed green wrappers. Published by John Bartholomew & Son Ltd. as part of Bartholomew’s World Survey Series, with contour colouring and political boundaries.
The map covers New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and adjoining regions, extending inland across the Murray-Darling basin and westwards into South Australia. Relief is shown by colour gradation, with railways, roads, towns, rivers, state boundaries and coastal features clearly marked. Insets show principal urban and regional centres, including Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Tasmania.
Scale approximately 1:2,500,000.
Sheet size: 99.2 × 73.1 cm.
Original price: 3s. 6d. net.
Mounted on cloth.
Original publisher’s wrappers present, printed in green, black and orange, with Bartholomew’s royal appointment device and publisher’s advertisements to the rear wrapper. The verso advertises Bartholomew atlases including the Atlas of Meteorology, Atlas of Zoogeography, Survey Gazetteer & Atlas of the British Isles, and The Times Survey Atlas of the World.
Near fine overall. Map clean and bright, with strong original colour, original fold lines and only light handling wear. Wrappers very good plus, with minor rubbing and light edge wear.
Institutionally recorded at the National Library of Australia, which dates the map to c.1922. A contemporary geographical notice also records Bartholomew’s Map of South-Eastern Australia, coloured to show height of land as part of Bartholomew’s World Survey Series. Scarce in commerce, particularly in this condition, mounted on cloth and with the original printed wrappers.
A fine early twentieth-century Bartholomew map of south-eastern Australia, combining practical geographical reference with the firm’s characteristic relief colouring and clear commercial cartographic design.
