Chad Valley Hygienic Toys Golden Mohair Teddy Bear with Original Foot Label, c.1930–1938

A charming and authentic Chad Valley teddy bear dating from the early interwar period, retaining the desirable woven Hygienic Toys foot label reading “Made in England by Chad Valley Co. Ltd.” This style of label was used by Chad Valley before the introduction of later Royal Warrant labels and provides a reliable basis for dating the bear to the 1930s.

Covered in golden mohair plush, the bear features amber and black glass eyes, a hand-stitched nose and mouth, and traditional brown cotton paw pads. He is fully jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips, allowing him to be posed in the manner intended by the maker. The softly modelled head, compact muzzle and gentle expression are characteristic of Chad Valley production during the period and reflect the firm’s reputation as one of Britain’s leading toy manufacturers.

At 38 cm in height, this is a particularly appealing cabinet-sized bear, retaining good proportions and an attractive, untouched appearance. The surviving foot label is an increasingly scarce feature and adds significantly to the bear’s collectability. Bears carrying the earlier Hygienic Toys labels are sought after by collectors as representative examples of Chad Valley’s pre-war production.
