A scarce and historically important election broadside issued during the celebrated Northumberland Parliamentary Election of 1826, one of the most fiercely contested county elections of the late Georgian period.
Presented as a dramatic dialogue between two freeholders, “Tom” and “Frank”, the broadside offers a sophisticated political discussion of the principal issues dividing voters during the election. Set in Bondgate, Alnwick, the traditional meeting place and commercial thoroughfare leading towards Alnwick Castle, the piece adopts the form of a conversation between ordinary electors in order to influence public opinion.
Unlike many election broadsides that relied primarily upon satire or personal attack, A Dialogue engages directly with one of the most contentious political questions of the age: Catholic Emancipation. The discussion centres upon the candidature of Henry Thomas Liddell, later 1st Earl of Ravensworth, and examines his position regarding Catholic political rights and parliamentary representation.
The exchange reflects the deep divisions that existed within Northumberland politics during the 1820s. “Tom” criticises Liddell’s support for Catholic relief, whilst “Frank” defends him as a man of principle and moderation. The text explores broader questions of religious liberty, constitutional government, conscience, political coalitions and aristocratic influence, providing a remarkable contemporary insight into the political language employed by provincial voters during the years immediately preceding the passage of the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829.
Particularly revealing is the discussion of electoral alliances and accusations of coalition-building amongst leading county families. Such concerns lay at the heart of Northumberland politics, where powerful aristocratic interests exercised considerable influence over parliamentary representation. The broadside therefore offers valuable evidence not only of local electoral culture but also of wider national debates concerning religious toleration and political reform.
The Northumberland election of 1826 generated a remarkable quantity of printed ephemera, including speeches, songs, handbills, addresses, mock advertisements, squibs and political dialogues. Items adopting a dramatic conversational format are considerably less common and often provide some of the clearest surviving evidence of contemporary political arguments.
Printed by J. Clark of Newcastle, whose press was responsible for numerous pieces of election literature associated with the campaign.
No separate institutional record for this specific item has been traced. While institutional collections contain significant holdings of Northumberland election literature and nineteenth-century political broadsides, no separately catalogued record for this exact broadside has been identified during research.
An excellent survival of Georgian political ephemera, combining local electoral history, religious controversy and constitutional debate in an accessible and highly effective popular format.
Condition: Near fine condition. Single-sheet printed broadside. Fold creases. Light age-toning and minor handling wear. Clean and well preserved with strong typographical impression throughout.
