NORTHUMBERLAND ELECTION BROADSIDE – Liddell’s Canvass – SONG BROADSIDE IN SUPPORT OF HENRY THOMAS LIDDELL – Newcastle – 1826

Tune: The Blooming Heather.

Newcastle: J. Clark, Printer, [1826].

Single printed broadside. Folio. Approximately 27.5 x 22.5 cm.

A scarce election song broadside issued during the fiercely contested Northumberland Parliamentary Election of 1826, celebrating the candidature of Henry Thomas Liddell (1797–1878), later 1st Earl of Ravensworth.

Printed to be sung to the popular air “The Blooming Heather”, the broadside forms part of the extensive body of electoral literature produced during one of the most dramatic county contests of the late Georgian period. Songs such as this were intended for public meetings, canvassing events, election dinners and informal political gatherings, where music provided an effective means of spreading political messages among voters and supporters.

The verses present Liddell as a patriotic defender of liberty, constitutional principles and national honour. Drawing heavily upon romantic imagery associated with the Northumbrian countryside, the song depicts the candidate travelling across the western districts of the county, among shepherds, heather-clad hills and loyal supporters. Throughout, Liddell is celebrated as a champion of freedom and independence whose reputation is said to inspire “all friends and patriots loyal and true”.

Particularly noteworthy is the repeated refrain invoking Liddell’s “deathless name”, an example of the highly personalised political culture of the period, in which candidates were frequently elevated into symbolic representatives of local identity, constitutional principles and county independence.

The broadside also reflects the wider political issues that shaped the 1826 election. References to liberty, corruption, oppression and slavery reveal the language commonly employed by reform-minded and independent political interests during the campaign. Election songs such as this demonstrate how national political questions were adapted for local audiences through accessible and memorable verse.

The Northumberland election of 1826 generated an extraordinary quantity of ephemeral printing, including speeches, songs, squibs, addresses, handbills, mock advertisements and satirical broadsides. Survival rates are low, making individual pieces valuable evidence of the political culture of provincial England during the late Georgian era.

Clark of Newcastle was among several printers engaged in producing election literature for competing political interests. His imprint appears on a number of surviving pieces associated with the contest.

No separate institutional record for this specific item has been traced. While institutional collections contain substantial holdings of Northumberland election ephemera and nineteenth-century political broadsides, no separately catalogued record for this particular broadside has been identified during research.

A rare and evocative survival of Georgian electoral culture, combining political propaganda, popular song and Northumbrian regional identity.

Condition: Near fine condition. Single-sheet printed broadside. Fold creases. Light age-toning and minor handling wear. Small marginal edge imperfections without loss of text. Strong and clear impression throughout.
