Sue Lyon and Hampton Fancher – Original Wedding Wire Photograph – Lolita / Blade Runner Association – 1963

Description

An original 1963 black-and-white wire press photograph of actress Sue Lyon and actor and future screenwriter Hampton Fancher, photographed immediately following their marriage in Los Angeles.

The photograph measures 25.8 × 21.8 cm and shows the young couple closely posed together, Lyon smiling in her wedding dress and veil while Fancher leans towards her and holds her hand.

The reverse retains an original contemporary press caption identifying the couple and recording:

“Actress Sue Lyon, who is 17, poses with her husband, Hampton Fancher III, aged 25, after their wedding in Los Angeles.”

The caption further identifies Lyon through the role that had made her internationally famous:

“Miss Lyon is best-known for her role as the star of the film Lolita.”

It also records that she had recently completed a new film in Mexico.

A contemporary newspaper archive stamp appears at the lower edge dated:

23 DEC 1963

together with newsroom crop and sizing annotations and a faint Shields Gazette Library stamp.

The surviving caption is especially useful because it provides direct contemporary identification of both subjects, their ages, the wedding context and Lyon’s immediate association with Lolita.

Sue Lyon and Lolita

Sue Lyon had become internationally known through her portrayal of Dolores “Lolita” Haze in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.

The role remained the defining performance of Lyon’s career and made her one of the most immediately recognisable young actresses of the early 1960s. Her subsequent films included John Huston’s The Night of the Iguana, filmed in Mexico and released in 1964.

The wording on the reverse — that Lyon had “recently completed a new film in Mexico” — is consistent with this stage of her career, though the surviving caption does not itself name the production.

Hampton Fancher and Blade Runner

The second subject gives the photograph an unusually good later cultural association.

Hampton Fancher was then working principally as an actor, but subsequently moved increasingly towards writing. He became closely associated with the development of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, adapting Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? into the screenplay from which the film developed.

The New Yorker records both Fancher’s acting career and his later transition into screenwriting, including his work on Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, while also referring to his short-lived marriage to Sue Lyon.

The photograph consequently has an unusual crossover between two landmark strands of twentieth-century popular culture:

Condition

Good condition overall for an original working wire photograph dating from 1963.

The central image remains clear and strongly contrasted, with good facial detail.

There is noticeable evidence of genuine newsroom use. The photograph has been incorporated into or retained with a larger working mount/border with heavy black crop masking to the left and upper/right margins. Numerous pale grease-pencil or editorial crop markings are visible across and around the photograph.

There is general age toning, light surface rubbing and marking, handling wear and modest edge and corner wear.

The reverse shows further newsroom annotation, light staining and general archive wear. The original caption remains attached and substantially legible.

These working marks form part of the photograph’s history and should be considered integral to the object.
