Description

A striking official Tintin wall clock featuring the celebrated red-and-white chequered Moon rocket from Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin.

Measuring 35 cm in diameter, this decorative wall clock combines the unmistakable visual style of Hergé’s illustrations with a bold, contemporary design inspired by one of the most recognisable objects in European comic-strip history. The clock features a vivid red circular case surrounding a clean, cream-coloured dial with bold black hour numerals and contrasting black hands. At the centre of the composition is Hergé’s famous red-and-white Moon rocket, accompanied by its characteristic yellow exhaust plume. The design incorporates a subsidiary seconds dial positioned at six o’clock, together with minute markings around the outer circumference. The clock’s distinctive combination of red, black, cream and white closely reflects the graphic clarity associated with Hergé’s celebrated ligne claire illustration style.

The Famous Tintin Moon Rocket

The red-and-white chequered Moon rocket is among the most celebrated designs in the history of The Adventures of Tintin.

Created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé (Georges Remi, 1907–1983), the rocket first appeared in the celebrated lunar adventure Destination Moon, originally serialised in Tintin magazine between 1950 and 1952 and published as an album in 1953. The adventure continued in Explorers on the Moon, published as an album in 1954. Together, these two stories represent one of Hergé’s most ambitious achievements, combining imaginative storytelling with unusually detailed scientific and technical research. The narrative follows Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus as they prepare for and undertake an extraordinary expedition to the Moon. Working at the fictional Sprodj Atomic Research Centre in Syldavia, Professor Calculus develops an advanced rocket capable of carrying a human crew into space.

The resulting spacecraft, with its distinctive red-and-white chequered exterior, became one of the defining images of the Tintin series. Its bold design was both visually memorable and ideally suited to Hergé’s precise, clearly delineated drawing style.

Tintin and the History of Space Exploration

One of the remarkable aspects of Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon is that they were created well before the first successful crewed lunar landing.

Hergé’s fictional Moon expedition preceded Apollo 11’s historic landing in July 1969 by more than fifteen years. Although the adventures contain imaginative and speculative elements, Hergé undertook considerable research into contemporary rocket technology, astronomy and the practical challenges of space travel.

The stories explore subjects including rocket propulsion, weightlessness, spacesuits, communications, lunar geography and the difficulties of operating in the vacuum of space. Hergé’s research was assisted by technical advice, notably from Bernard Heuvelmans and other sources familiar with contemporary scientific developments. The result was a pair of adventures that combined the excitement of science fiction with a degree of technical realism unusual in popular comics of the period.

The red-and-white Moon rocket subsequently became one of the most recognisable symbols associated with Tintin and remains an enduring favourite among collectors of Hergé memorabilia.
