A striking original 1962 black-and-white press photograph of Sue Lyon as Dolores “Lolita” Haze in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita, adapted from Vladimir Nabokov’s celebrated and controversial 1955 novel.

Measuring 20.4 × 25.3 cm, approximately the classic 10 × 8-inch press format, the photograph shows Lyon outdoors in character, wearing a patterned two-piece bathing costume and broad-brimmed sunhat while reclining beside an open book or papers. The scene has the deliberately composed quality associated with the film’s original publicity photography and is immediately identifiable with Lyon’s defining screen role.

The original production reference:

L-47

appears clearly in the lower-left corner of the image.

That production numbering is particularly useful. Other surviving original Lolita publicity photographs use similar L-series references; for example, the documented Kubrick portrait of Lyon commonly known as L-66 was photographed during production and published in connection with the film’s 1962 release.

Contemporary British Press Provenance

The reverse carries a manuscript identification:

“Sue Lyon – Lolita”

followed by:

“An MGM Release”

together with a Shields Gazette Library stamp and a partially visible contemporary November 1962 date stamp.

These markings place this individual print firmly within a working British newspaper archive during the film’s original release year.

Kubrick’s Lolita received its London premiere on 6 September 1962. The present print was therefore being retained and used by the British press within months of the film’s first UK exhibition.

Sue Lyon and Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita

Sue Lyon was only fourteen when cast as Dolores Haze. Kubrick’s film, starring James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers and Lyon, adapted Nabokov’s novel under severe contemporary censorship constraints. The resulting picture substantially altered and softened aspects of the source novel while retaining its central story of Humbert Humbert’s obsession with and abuse of Dolores.

Lyon’s performance nevertheless became the defining role of her career and brought her international recognition. She later received the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for the film.

Original production and publicity imagery of Lyon became central to the film’s visual identity. Getty’s archive still holds a substantial body of original-release-period Lolita imagery, including scene photographs of Lyon in character.

Nabokov and the Controversy of Lolita

Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita had already generated enormous controversy before Kubrick attempted to film it. First published in Paris in 1955, the novel is narrated by Humbert Humbert, whose sophisticated and manipulative prose attempts to disguise his sexual exploitation of the child Dolores Haze.

Its subject matter created major difficulties for publishers and later for filmmakers. When Kubrick and producer James B. Harris acquired the screen rights, the novel was widely regarded as exceptionally difficult to adapt within the censorship regime governing mainstream American cinema.

The film’s publicity consequently became an important part of its cultural history, presenting Lyon as the instantly recognisable face of the adaptation while working within contemporary restrictions on what could be shown or stated explicitly.

The present photograph survives from that original publicity environment, rather than being a later collector reproduction.

Condition

Very good condition overall for an original working press photograph dating from 1962.

The photographic image remains sharp and strongly contrasted, with excellent detail throughout. There is general age-related toning, minor surface and handling wear and modest edge and corner wear consistent with genuine newspaper-library use.

The upper border shows slight handling and age-related marking. The reverse has light surface wear, newsroom handling and some minor marks associated with its archive history.

The handwritten identification, Shields Gazette Library stamp and contemporary date markings remain visible.
