Description

A striking original 1962 black-and-white press photograph of Sue Lyon, star of Stanley Kubrick’s controversial adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita.

Measuring 19.9 × 14.1 cm, the photograph shows Lyon outdoors in a distinctive knitted top, turning back towards the camera against a dark, softly focused background. The composition is unusually atmospheric and psychologically charged, giving the image considerably more presence than a conventional studio publicity portrait.

The reverse provides the crucial evidence for the photograph’s period status and subject identification. It retains a contemporary typed identification reading:

“Sue Lyon”

followed by a crossed-through reference:

“See ‘A Meeting with Lolita’”

Also present are the original Shields Gazette Library stamp, manuscript newspaper-library instructions and a clearly struck archive date of:

These markings establish the photograph as a genuine working press print circulating in Britain during the original 1962 release period of Lolita, rather than a later reproduction.

Sue Lyon and Lolita

Sue Lyon became internationally famous through her portrayal of Dolores “Lolita” Haze in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film.

The production adapted Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel, one of the most controversial literary works of the post-war period. Told through the voice of Humbert Humbert, an unreliable narrator who attempts to aestheticise and romanticise his abuse of Dolores Haze, the novel had encountered major publishing difficulties and censorship controversy before eventually becoming recognised as a major work of twentieth-century literature.

Kubrick faced a formidable problem in bringing the novel to the screen. Contemporary censorship restrictions made a literal adaptation impossible, and the film consequently softened, obscured and displaced much of the novel’s sexual content while presenting Dolores as older than she is in Nabokov’s book.

Sue Lyon was still in her mid-teens when Lolita was released, and the publicity surrounding her performance became inseparable from the controversy surrounding the film itself. Her appearance in contemporary promotional material therefore has particular historical resonance.

Archive Significance

The combination of image, date and surviving archive material gives this photograph significance beyond that of a generic portrait of Sue Lyon. It survives as a physical artefact from the contemporary press coverage surrounding one of the most discussed literary adaptations of the 1960s.

Condition

Very good condition overall for an original working press photograph dating from 1962.

The image remains sharp and strongly contrasted, with excellent detail to Lyon’s face, hair and clothing.

There is light age-related toning, minor surface and handling wear and modest edge and corner wear consistent with genuine newspaper use.

The reverse shows normal archive handling and light age-related marking. The Shields Gazette Library stamp, 10 November 1962 date stamp, typed identification and manuscript annotations remain clearly visible.

The reference to “A Meeting with Lolita” has been crossed through during the photograph’s working newspaper life.

These verso markings have deliberately been retained and form an important part of the photograph’s provenance.
