THE COMMITTEE OF THE HON. H. T. LIDDELL. TO SOLICIT YOUR VOTE AND INTEREST AT THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION. NORTHUMBERLAND ELECTION VISITING CARD, 1826.

[Northumberland, probably Newcastle or Alnwick, 1826.]

Printed election committee card on stiff card stock.

A remarkably scarce survival from the celebrated Northumberland General Election of 1826, comprising an original printed election committee card issued on behalf of Henry Thomas Liddell.

The card bears the simple but highly effective printed message:

“The Committee of the Hon. H. T. Liddell. To Solicit Your Vote and Interest at the Next General Election.”

Although modest in appearance, items of this type formed an important part of Georgian electioneering. Committee members and canvassers distributed cards directly to freeholders during personal visits, canvassing tours, public meetings and election gatherings. Their purpose was not merely to identify campaign representatives but to reinforce personal obligations and political connections within the county electorate.

Such cards represent the most ephemeral level of election literature. Unlike speeches, addresses and printed manifestos, they were intended for immediate practical use and were seldom preserved after the election. Consequently, surviving examples are considerably rarer than larger election broadsides and often provide a more direct connection with the day-to-day mechanics of political campaigning.

The Northumberland election of 1826 ranks among the most significant county contests of the late Georgian period. Candidates including Henry Thomas Liddell, Matthew Bell, Thomas Wentworth Beaumont and Lord Howick generated an extraordinary volume of printed election material. However, campaign cards and committee-issued canvassing ephemera survive only infrequently.

The present example is particularly appealing because it illustrates the organisational structure behind Liddell’s campaign. Rather than promoting a speech or political statement, the card represents the practical machinery of electoral canvassing and demonstrates how committees sought to secure the votes and influence of individual freeholders across the county.

Institutional collections including the British Library, Northumberland Archives and major research libraries preserve substantial holdings of British election ephemera. However, I have not located a separately catalogued institutional record for this specific committee card. Indeed, material of this type is often entirely absent from institutional catalogues owing to its transient nature and small format. The present card therefore appears not to be properly recorded as a distinct publication.

An exceptionally uncommon survival from one of the most important county elections of the Georgian era and a highly desirable piece of British political ephemera.
