A notably scarce and unusually small-format election handbill issued during the celebrated Northumberland General Election of 1826, one of the most fiercely contested county elections of the late Georgian period.

The brief but pointed text reads:

“The Freeholders of the County of Northumberland are most earnestly requested, by a Brother Freeholder, not to promise their Votes, until all the Candidates for the next General Election are known.”

Dated Newcastle, 10th March, 1826, and printed by E. Walker of Newcastle, the handbill represents a fascinating example of tactical election literature. Rather than advocating a particular candidate, it attempts to influence the timing of electoral commitments, urging freeholders to delay pledging support until the complete field of candidates has emerged.

The timing is particularly significant. Issued during a period of uncertainty and intense political manoeuvring, the handbill reflects the fluid nature of the Northumberland contest, in which candidates including Matthew Bell, Henry Thomas Liddell, Thomas Wentworth Beaumont, and Lord Howick sought to mobilise support across one of England’s largest and most politically important counties.

Although only a few lines in length, the document offers valuable insight into electoral strategy before the Reform Act of 1832. In county elections, securing early promises of support was a crucial component of canvassing. This handbill directly challenges that practice, suggesting that at least one political interest feared that premature commitments might distort the eventual outcome once all candidates had formally declared themselves.

Small ephemeral election notices of this nature were generally intended for immediate distribution and disposal. Their survival rate is therefore considerably lower than that of speeches, addresses and poll books, making them particularly valuable evidence of grassroots electoral activity.

Institutional collections such as the British Library, Northumberland Archives and major university special collections preserve examples of Northumberland election ephemera. However, I have not located a separately catalogued institutional record for this specific handbill. As with many items from the 1826 contest, examples may survive within broader collections of election material, but the present publication does not appear to be properly recorded as a distinct item.
