Product Description

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH MAP OF ANTARCTICA – c. 1957-1958

Specially drawn for The Daily Telegraph by Geographia Ltd., London, [1957–1958].

Large folding colour map of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, issued by The Daily Telegraph during the International Geophysical Year. The map depicts territorial claims, exploration routes, scientific bases, whaling grounds, expedition landings and major Antarctic geographical features, together with inset hemispheric projections and extensive historical and scientific notes.

The decorative borders incorporate portraits of notable Antarctic explorers and related imagery, including Captain James Cook, Sir Edmund Hillary, penguins, whales, icebreakers and expedition vessels. A substantial panel headed “Antarctica: Facts and Figures” discusses geography, climate, exploration history and contemporary scientific activity.

The map is datable to 1957–1958 through internal references to the International Geophysical Year (1957–1958) and the proposed Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Copyright line at lower margin: “Specially drawn for The Daily Telegraph by Geographia Ltd., 167 Fleet Street, London E.C.4.”

An attractive and informative mid-century Antarctic map produced at the height of post-war polar exploration, reflecting renewed international scientific interest in Antarctica immediately prior to the Antarctic Treaty of 1959. The map records national territorial claims by Britain, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Norway and France, while also illustrating newly established scientific bases associated with IGY research programmes.

Sheet size approximately 75.5 × 50.3 cm.

Condition: Very good overall. Original folds as issued; some light creasing and a few small areas of fold wear, including slight splitting and minor browning at intersecting folds and verso; colours strong and fresh. A well-preserved example.

Institutionally uncommon, but with examples traced at the British Library and Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
