Product Description
Associated Press Telephoto of Tadashi Yamamoto Following Radiation Exposure from the Castle Bravo Hydrogen Bomb Test – 30 March 1954
Description
A rare and historically important original Associated Press telephoto dated 30 March 1954, depicting Tadashi Yamamoto, one of the crew members of the Japanese tuna fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryū Maru (Lucky Dragon No. 5), showing the effects of radiation burns sustained following exposure to radioactive fallout from the United States Castle Bravo thermonuclear test at Bikini Atoll.
The stark side-profile portrait provides powerful visual evidence of one of the most significant incidents of the early nuclear age. The original Associated Press caption affixed to the reverse identifies Yamamoto as a member of the crew of the Fukuryū Maru, whose vessel was showered with radioactive dust following the American hydrogen bomb explosion on 1 March 1954. According to the contemporary caption, the vessel was approximately seventy-one miles from Bikini Atoll and outside the designated restricted zone when the fallout occurred.
The Lucky Dragon incident rapidly became an international diplomatic and humanitarian controversy. Twenty-three crew members were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, leading to worldwide concern over atmospheric nuclear testing and contributing significantly to the emerging anti-nuclear movement. The event remains one of the most frequently cited examples of the unintended human consequences of Cold War nuclear weapons development.
Unlike photographs depicting military hardware, politicians or test sites, this telephoto focuses directly upon one of the individuals affected by the disaster. As such, it represents an unusually powerful and personal record of the human impact of nuclear testing during the Cold War.
The reverse retains the original Associated Press telephoto caption together with archive markings from the Shields Gazette, from whose photographic archive the image originates. Such telephotos were transmitted electronically for newspaper publication and survive today as important primary-source documents recording major international events as they were reported to the world’s press.
A significant piece of Cold War history, nuclear history and twentieth-century documentary photography.
