Associated Press Press Photograph of HMS Explorer, Britain’s Experimental High-Speed Submarine, Visiting London – 19 March 1957

Description

An original Associated Press press photograph depicting the Royal Navy experimental submarine HMS Explorer arriving at India Dock, London, on 19 March 1957 during a six-day publicised visit to the capital.

The original Associated Press caption affixed to the reverse identifies HMS Explorer as one of Britain’s pioneering experimental high-speed submarines. Constructed as part of the Royal Navy’s post-war research programme, Explorer was designed to investigate advanced underwater propulsion technologies and represented one of the most ambitious submarine development projects undertaken in Britain during the early Cold War.

The caption explains that Explorer’s propulsion system utilised turbines supplied with steam and carbon dioxide generated through the combustion of diesel fuel in an atmosphere of steam and oxygen, enabling the submarine to develop full power whilst submerged and independent of atmospheric oxygen. This innovative but highly complex system was intended to increase underwater speed and endurance at a time when submarine technology was advancing rapidly around the world.

The photograph itself is particularly attractive, showing HMS Explorer entering London docks viewed from an elevated position, with crew members visible on deck and dockside personnel greeting the vessel. The image captures an important chapter in Britain’s post-war naval experimentation and technological development during the transition from conventional submarines to the nuclear age.

Known within naval circles as one of the Royal Navy’s most unusual experimental vessels, HMS Explorer remains a fascinating subject for collectors of Cold War, maritime and naval technology history.

The reverse retains the original Associated Press caption and archive markings from the Shields Gazette, from whose photographic archive the photograph originates.

An excellent original press photograph documenting one of Britain’s most innovative and distinctive submarine projects of the 1950s.
