Associated Press Feature Photograph of Hawk Anti-Aircraft Missiles at Key West Following the Cuban Missile Crisis – November 1963

Description

An original Associated Press Feature Photograph depicting a battery of Hawk anti-aircraft missiles at Key West, Florida, issued for newspaper publication in November 1963, scarcely one year after the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the United States and Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war.

The original Associated Press feature caption affixed to the reverse identifies the image as showing fifteen Hawk anti-aircraft missiles positioned at Key West and aimed towards Cuba. According to the caption, the missile battery had originally been established during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 and was subsequently retained on a permanent basis as part of the United States air-defence network.

The photograph captures one of the most tangible military legacies of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Situated only around ninety miles from Cuba, Key West occupied a strategically critical position during the confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. The continued deployment of Hawk missiles there in 1963 reflected ongoing Cold War tensions even after the immediate crisis had passed.

Developed during the 1950s, the Hawk missile system became one of the most important medium-range surface-to-air defence systems employed by the United States and its allies. The image therefore records not only a significant moment in Cold War history but also an important chapter in the development of modern air-defence technology.

The tropical setting, with rows of missiles positioned beneath palm trees overlooking the water, creates an unusually striking visual juxtaposition between a peaceful landscape and the military preparations that characterised the Cold War era.

The photograph retains its original Associated Press feature notice and originates from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, with archive markings on the reverse.

A highly evocative original press photograph relating to the Cuban Missile Crisis, Cold War military strategy and American air-defence systems during one of the most tense periods of twentieth-century history.
