Victory Day 1946 – Original Press Photograph of the Marching Column Proceeding Along The Mall, London – 8 June 1946

Description

An original large-format press photograph recording the principal British and Allied Victory Day celebrations held in London on 8 June 1946, showing a massed marching column proceeding along The Mall towards the official saluting base.

Photographed from a commanding elevated position, the image looks eastwards along the densely decorated ceremonial route. Thousands of uniformed personnel advance in precisely ordered formations between lines of Union Flags and Allied standards, while immense crowds fill the pavements on either side. Two large flags in the immediate foreground frame the procession and enhance the depth and imposing symmetry of the composition.

The original typed caption retained on the reverse reads:

“V-DAY CELEBRATIONS. A GENERAL VIEW OF THE MARCHING COLUMN PROCEEDING ALONG THE MALL TO THE SALUTING BASE. 8/6/46.”

This is not a photograph of VE Day on 8 May 1945, but of Britain’s great official Victory Celebrations of 8 June 1946. Organised after the conclusion of hostilities against both Germany and Japan, the events provided a national commemoration of complete Allied victory in the Second World War. British, Commonwealth, Empire and Allied servicemen and women marched through London alongside representatives of the civilian services whose work had supported the war effort.

The celebrations centred upon two enormous processions: a mechanised column of more than 500 vehicles and a separate marching column. Both passed the saluting base on The Mall, where King George VI and other members of the Royal Family were joined by senior political and military figures. The marching column included representatives of Allied nations, the Dominions, British and Commonwealth armed forces, and wartime civilian organisations.

The scale of the formation shown here gives the photograph considerable documentary value. Rather than concentrating upon an individual dignitary or isolated group, it records the extraordinary breadth and ceremonial discipline of the parade itself. The long perspective along The Mall, the massed ranks, extensive flag displays and tightly packed spectators together form a powerful image of public commemoration at the end of six years of global conflict.

An original Associated Press photograph, with the photographer unidentified. The reverse also bears the copyright stamp of Westminster Press Provincial Newspapers Limited, its original typed press caption and the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp. It comes from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette.
