Keystone Press Photograph of Annelies von Ribbentrop Leaving the Palace of Justice, Nuremberg – 22 January 1945
Description
An original Keystone press photograph depicting Annelies von Ribbentrop, wife of German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, leaving the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg during the closing months of the Second World War.
The original Keystone caption on the reverse identifies the image as showing Mrs Ribbentrop speaking to an Allied guard as she leaves the Palace of Justice, where she reportedly visited regularly to collect correspondence from her husband. The photograph captures a striking and historically evocative moment, juxtaposing a prominent figure of the Nazi elite with Allied military authority amid the collapse of the Third Reich.
Whilst often remembered simply as the wife of one of the principal defendants at the Nuremberg Trials, Annelies von Ribbentrop became a significant figure in her own right in the decades following the war. Far from distancing herself from National Socialism, she remained a committed defender of her husband’s reputation and publicly rejected the legitimacy of the judgments passed upon leading Nazi figures. Throughout her later life she actively sought to rehabilitate Joachim von Ribbentrop’s image, publishing memoirs and campaigning against what she regarded as the injustice of his execution.
As such, the photograph documents more than a personal visit. It captures a figure who would become one of the most visible post-war defenders of the Nazi leadership, maintaining loyalty to both her husband and the political worldview that had led Germany into catastrophe.
Original press photographs relating to the senior leadership of the Third Reich and their families remain highly sought after by collectors of Second World War history. Images depicting the immediate aftermath of Nazi Germany’s defeat are especially significant, as they document the transition from wartime dictatorship to Allied occupation and the beginning of the legal reckoning that followed.
The reverse retains its original Keystone press caption together with archive markings from the Shields Gazette, from whose photographic archive the image originates.
An important and thought-provoking primary-source photograph relating to the fall of Nazi Germany, the Nuremberg process and the post-war legacy of National Socialism.
