P.A.-Reuters Press Photograph of HMS Affray Reported Missing – 17 April 1951
Description
An original P.A.-Reuters press photograph depicting the Royal Navy submarine HMS Affray, issued on 17 April 1951, the day the vessel was officially reported missing in the English Channel.
The photograph is accompanied by its original P.A.-Reuters caption on the reverse, issued during the initial stages of what would become one of Britain’s most significant post-war naval disasters. The caption records that ships, aircraft and helicopters were searching the English Channel after HMS Affray failed to surface following exercises south of the Isle of Wight. Significantly, the contemporary report notes that the Admiralty still hoped the submarine might not be in serious difficulty, a statement made before the true scale of the tragedy became known.
HMS Affray was the last Royal Navy submarine lost at sea. Following an extensive search operation, the wreck was eventually located on the seabed with the loss of all aboard. The disaster prompted widespread public attention and remains one of the most important incidents in British submarine history.
What distinguishes this photograph is its immediacy. Rather than commemorating the disaster retrospectively, it was distributed at the very moment uncertainty surrounded the submarine’s fate. As a result, it serves as a genuine contemporary document recording the unfolding of a major national tragedy.
The reverse retains the original P.A.-Reuters caption together with archive markings from the Shields Gazette, from whose photographic archive the photograph originates.
An important primary-source photograph relating to Royal Navy history, British maritime disasters and Cold War-era submarine operations.
Condition
Very good condition. Minor edge wear, light creasing and handling marks consistent with newspaper archive use. Original caption and archive markings remain present on the reverse.
