Original Wirephoto – Korean War Prisoners Return Home Aboard SS Asturias, Southampton – 16 September 1953
Description
An original press photograph recording one of the most moving homecomings of the post-war era, showing the troopship SS Asturias arriving at Southampton on 16 September 1953 carrying British prisoners of war returning from Korea.
The original wirephoto caption attached to the reverse identifies the scene as the arrival of approximately 550 former prisoners of war from Korea, returning aboard the troopship Asturias after years of captivity. Thousands of relatives gathered at Southampton docks to welcome the men home, while wives, parents and family members waited throughout the night for the ship’s arrival. The photograph captures the dramatic moment as the vessel approaches the quay, greeted by cheering crowds and waving relatives eager to reunite with loved ones.
The image represents an important chapter in the history of the Korean War (1950–1953). Following the Armistice Agreement signed in July 1953, prisoners held by both sides were gradually repatriated, bringing an end to years of uncertainty for families across Britain and the Commonwealth. Photographs documenting the return of former prisoners are considerably scarcer than images of military operations and provide a powerful human perspective on the conflict.
The scene possesses considerable emotional impact, with the large liner festooned with flags as it makes its final approach to the dockside through crowds gathered to witness a historic homecoming.
Retaining its original wirephoto caption and originating from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, this is an authentic contemporary newspaper press photograph documenting a significant moment in British post-war history.
