Associated Press Press Photograph of HMS Alliance Departing for the First Anniversary Memorial of HMS Affray – 17 April 1952

Description

An original Associated Press press photograph showing the Royal Navy submarine HMS Alliance departing Portsmouth on 17 April 1952 to participate in a memorial ceremony marking the first anniversary of the loss of HMS Affray, one of Britain’s most tragic post-war naval disasters.

The original Associated Press caption affixed to the reverse records that HMS Alliance sailed from Portsmouth laden with wreaths for a memorial service held above the wreck site of HMS Affray in the English Channel, approximately seventy-five miles south-west of Portsmouth. The ceremony commemorated the loss of seventy-five officers and men, who perished when HMS Affray was lost on 17 April 1951.

The photograph captures HMS Alliance shortly after leaving HMS Dolphin, Portsmouth, and provides an excellent contemporary view of a Royal Navy submarine during the early Cold War period. Particularly striking is the prominent shark-mouth motif painted on the bow, creating a visually memorable image that combines naval history with strong photographic appeal.

The loss of HMS Affray remains one of the most significant submarine accidents in British naval history. As the last Royal Navy submarine lost at sea, the disaster attracted considerable public attention and prompted extensive investigations into submarine safety and operational procedures.

Original press photographs relating to HMS Affray are increasingly scarce, particularly examples produced at the time of the first anniversary commemorations. This photograph documents not only a Royal Navy vessel but also an important act of remembrance for one of the most notable maritime tragedies of the post-war era.

The reverse retains its original Associated Press caption and the archive stamp of the Shields Gazette, from whose photographic archive the photograph originates.

An important original press photograph combining Royal Navy history, Cold War naval operations and the commemoration of one of Britain’s most significant submarine disasters.
