Original Press Photograph of the Liberation Column Passing Through Trafalgar Square During the London Victory Parade – 8 June 1946

Description

An original large-format press photograph showing the Liberation Column and marching military contingents passing through Trafalgar Square during the official London Victory Celebrations of 8 June 1946.

Photographed from a commanding elevated position, the image captures armoured vehicles and military transport entering Trafalgar Square while a marching column advances along the densely crowded route beyond. Thousands of spectators fill the surrounding streets and pavements, with Union Flags and Allied banners prominently displayed from nearby buildings. The high viewpoint provides an unusually comprehensive record of both the military procession and the extraordinary scale of public attendance.

The original typed caption retained on the reverse reads:

“V-DAY CELEBRATIONS. A GENERAL VIEW SHOWING THE LIBERATION COLUMN IN FOREGROUND AND THE MARCHING COLUMN IN THE BACKGROUND PASSING THROUGH TRAFALGAR SQ., LONDON. 8/6/46.”

The photograph records the principal national Victory Parade held in London on 8 June 1946, more than a year after VE Day and following the defeat of Japan. The celebrations commemorated Allied victory across both the European and Far Eastern theatres and included British, Commonwealth and Allied military contingents, armoured vehicles, bands and representatives of the wartime services. The official programme also included public entertainments and evening displays, with the parade forming the centrepiece of the day.

The Liberation Column was intended to represent the vehicles and services associated with the liberation of occupied Europe and Allied victory. In this photograph, armoured vehicles move through Trafalgar Square beneath the gaze of enormous crowds, while the marching column continues in the background. The composition conveys both the ceremonial scale of the event and the public relief and national pride that accompanied the formal celebration of the war’s end.

The reverse bears the original press caption, copyright stamp of Westminster Press Provincial Newspapers Limited and the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp. The photographer is not identified.

A particularly strong and atmospheric contemporary record of the 1946 London Victory Parade, combining military, social and topographical interest.
