Product Description
Geological Survey of England and Wales / Ordnance Survey – Sheet 3: Lake District – 1907 – Folding Map
London: Geological Survey of England and Wales / Edward Stanford Ltd., 1907.
First edition thus. Large folding geological map of the Lake District, published in 1907 by the Geological Survey of England and Wales over the Ordnance Survey map of 1901. Dissected onto linen by Edward Stanford Ltd. and housed in the original Stanford cloth covers with printed title label.
A highly attractive Edwardian geological map covering the Lake District and adjoining areas, including Cumberland, Westmorland, Furness, parts of Lancashire and the Isle of Man inset. The map combines detailed Ordnance Survey topography with vivid Geological Survey colour, showing roads, railways, settlements, lakes, mountain districts, coastal contours and geological formations with exceptional clarity.
The Lake District is one of the most geologically important regions in Britain, and this sheet presents its complex formations in a striking visual form. The strongly coloured geological zones, particularly around the Cumbrian coast and central fells, make the map both scientifically informative and visually impressive.
Published for practical use by geologists, surveyors, engineers, teachers and serious field workers, the sheet was issued in a robust folding linen format by Edward Stanford Ltd., one of Britain’s most important map publishers. Geological Survey sheets of this period were working documents and are often found worn, loose or defective; complete examples in original covers and near fine condition are uncommon.
Sheet size: 68.7 x 49.2 cm.
Condition: Near fine overall. Map clean, bright and sound, dissected onto linen as issued, with only minimal age toning and light handling wear. Original Stanford covers very good indeed, with light rubbing and minor wear to printed label.
