Product Description

Geological Survey of England and Wales / Ordnance Survey – Sheet 11 :Derby & Charnwood – 1937 – Folding Map

London: Geological Survey of England and Wales / Edward Stanford Ltd., 1937.

Second revised edition. Large folding geological map covering Derbyshire, Charnwood and adjoining districts, published by the Geological Survey of England and Wales over the Ordnance Survey map of 1908. Solid Edition, Sheet 11. Edition of 1000 copies. Code: 1000/37. Dissected onto linen by Edward Stanford Ltd. and housed in the original Stanford covers with printed title label.

A striking inter-war geological map of a particularly important Midlands region, including Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and adjoining areas. The map combines detailed Ordnance Survey topography with vivid Geological Survey colouring, showing roads, railways, settlements, county boundaries, rivers and geological formations with exceptional clarity.

The sheet is especially notable for its treatment of the Derbyshire coalfield, Charnwood Forest, Carboniferous limestone, Triassic formations and associated igneous and sedimentary geology. The strong bands of colour and extensive geological key make the map both scientifically useful and visually compelling.

Produced for practical field use by geologists, engineers, surveyors and educational institutions, such maps were frequently handled, folded and refolded. Complete examples in near fine condition, retaining their original Stanford covers, are increasingly desirable.

Sheet size: 70 x 50 cm.

Condition: Near fine overall. Clean, bright and sound, dissected onto linen as issued, with minimal age toning and light handling wear only. Original Stanford covers very good indeed, with light rubbing and minor wear to the printed label.
