Product Description

Geological Survey of England and Wales / Ordnance Survey – Sheet 19 – Berkshire, Wiltshire & Hampshire – 1939 – Folding Map

London: Geological Survey of England and Wales / Edward Stanford Ltd., 1939.

Second revised edition. Large folding geological map covering Berkshire, Wiltshire and Hampshire, published by the Geological Survey of England and Wales over the Ordnance Survey map of 1897. Solid Edition, Sheet 19. Edition of 1000 copies. Code: 1000/39. Dissected onto linen by Edward Stanford Ltd. and housed in the original Stanford covers with printed title label.

A highly attractive inter-war geological map of southern England, extending across the chalk downs, Thames Valley, Salisbury Plain, Kennet Valley, Hampshire basin and adjoining districts. The map combines detailed Ordnance Survey topography with vivid Geological Survey colour, showing roads, railways, settlements, rivers, county boundaries and geological formations with exceptional clarity.

The sheet is especially notable for its treatment of the chalk, greensand, oolitic and tertiary formations of the region, with the geological key printed to the right-hand side. Towns and districts shown include Winchester, Salisbury, Andover, Marlborough, Newbury, Swindon, Reading and surrounding areas.

Produced for practical field use by geologists, engineers, surveyors and educational institutions, these sheets were frequently handled and are often encountered worn or incomplete. This example is particularly desirable in near fine condition and retaining its original Stanford covers.

Sheet size: 69.8 x 50.2 cm.

Condition: near fine overall. Clean, bright and sound, dissected onto linen as issued, with minimal age toning and light handling wear only. Original Stanford covers very good indeed, with light rubbing and minor wear to the printed label.
