Product Description

Geological Survey of England and Wales / Ordnance Survey – Sheet 15 – Warwick & Oxford – 1931 – Folding Map

London: Geological Survey of England and Wales / Edward Stanford Ltd., 1931.

Second revised edition. Large folding geological map covering Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and adjoining districts, published by the Geological Survey of England and Wales over the Ordnance Survey map of 1908. Solid Edition, Sheet 15. Edition of 1000 copies. Code: 1000/31. Dissected onto linen by Edward Stanford Ltd. and housed in the original Stanford covers with printed title label.

A vivid inter-war geological map of the central Midlands and upper Thames region, extending across Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, parts of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire. The map combines detailed Ordnance Survey topography with Geological Survey colouring, showing roads, railways, settlements, rivers, county boundaries and geological formations with exceptional clarity.

The sheet is especially notable for its treatment of the Jurassic and Triassic formations of the region, together with the geological structure around the Cotswolds, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and the surrounding river valleys. The strong colour contrasts and side keys give the map both scientific value and strong decorative appeal.

Produced for practical field use by geologists, engineers, surveyors and educational institutions, these sheets were often heavily handled. This example is particularly desirable in near fine condition and retaining its original Stanford covers.

Sheet size: 69.8 x 50.4 cm.

Condition: Near fine overall. Clean, bright and sound, dissected onto linen as issued, with minimal age toning and light handling wear only. Original Stanford covers very good indeed, with light rubbing and minor wear to the printed label.
