Description

An important original black-and-white press wirephoto by Japanese photojournalist Kazuhisa Ikawa, documenting Vietnamese civilians fleeing the fighting near Lạng Sơn during the opening phase of the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War.

The photograph shows a group of civilians, including three young children, standing beside heavily laden carts carrying bedding, baskets, household utensils and other possessions recovered from their homes. The carts have been improvised as mobile stores for virtually everything the families were able to save. The children occupy the foreground, while adults stand among the vehicles and bundled belongings behind them. The mountainous landscape establishes the northern Vietnamese setting.

The contemporary caption printed vertically along the left margin is headed “FLEE FIGHTING” and reads substantially:

“Wagons full of household effects, Vietnamese civilians flee fighting on Highway One east of town of Lang Son, Vietnam, after their homes were destroyed in a Chinese artillery barrage.”

The caption identifies the photographer as Kazuhisa Ikawa and records that the image was received in Tokyo from Hanoi through the Vietnam News Agency radiophoto service. It further specifies that Asahi credit was mandatory, indicating its original connection with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun before distribution by Associated Press.

The photograph is dated 26 February 1979, only nine days after Chinese forces crossed Vietnam’s northern frontier on 17 February. Lạng Sơn Province lay on one of the principal axes of the Chinese advance, and the provincial capital occupied a strategically important position on the main road leading south towards Hanoi. Contemporary reporting described large refugee movements along the highway as civilians left the threatened town and surrounding settlements; Kazuhisa Ikawa reported that tens of thousands of Lạng Sơn’s inhabitants had already fled during the opening days of the conflict.

China’s invasion was conducted across several northern provinces, with particularly heavy fighting around Lạng Sơn, Cao Bằng and Lào Cai. Artillery bombardment preceded and accompanied the advance, while the conflict caused extensive damage to border communities and displaced large numbers of civilians. Chinese forces later occupied Lạng Sơn before announcing their withdrawal in March.

The image is especially valuable as a civilian counterpart to Ikawa’s photographs of Vietnamese artillery and military preparations. It records not weapons or troops but the immediate domestic consequences of bombardment: families travelling with bedding, cooking vessels and the remnants of their homes. The young children standing beside the overloaded carts give the photograph considerable humanitarian and social-historical significance.

This is a genuine period wire-service photograph produced for contemporary newspaper publication, not a later reproduction. Its named photographer, complete transmission caption, Asahi Shimbun attribution and direct connection with the comparatively underrepresented Sino-Vietnamese War give it greater documentary interest than an anonymous general press photograph.

Condition

Good condition for an original working newspaper photograph. There is light overall toning, minor surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Small marginal creases and pressure marks are present, with slight edge and corner wear. Contemporary black editorial border lines appear along the lower and side margins.

The original transmitted caption remains substantially complete and legible along the left-hand edge. The reverse displays light age toning and minor handling marks, together with the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp and a receiving date of 26 February 1979. The principal photographic image remains clear and well contrasted, with good detail throughout the figures, carts and household possessions.
