Product Description

Geological Survey of England and Wales / Ordnance Survey – Sheet 22 – Dartmoor – 1908 – Folding Map

London: Geological Survey of England and Wales / Edward Stanford Ltd., 1908.

First edition thus. Large folding geological map of Dartmoor and adjoining parts of Devon and Cornwall, published by the Geological Survey of England and Wales over the Ordnance Survey map of 1908. Solid Edition, Sheet 22. Dissected onto linen by Edward Stanford Ltd. and housed in the original Stanford covers with printed title label.

A striking early twentieth-century geological map of one of Britain’s most distinctive geological landscapes. The sheet covers Dartmoor, the South Devon coast, parts of Cornwall and the English Channel, combining detailed Ordnance Survey topography with vivid Geological Survey colour. The great Dartmoor granite mass is shown prominently in strong red, with surrounding Devonian and Carboniferous formations, sedimentary beds, igneous intrusions, roads, railways, settlements, rivers and coastlines clearly delineated.

The map is especially notable for its treatment of Dartmoor’s granite geology and the surrounding mineral-rich Devon and Cornish landscapes, areas of major importance to British geological study, mining history and field science. The large blank expanse of the Channel contrasts beautifully with the coloured geological landmass and right-hand index.

Produced for practical field use, these sheets were often heavily handled. This example is particularly desirable in near fine condition and retaining its original Stanford covers.

Sheet size: 68.7 x 49.8 cm.

Condition: Near fine overall. Clean, bright and sound, dissected onto linen as issued, with minimal age toning and light handling wear only. Original Stanford covers very good indeed, with light rubbing and minor wear to the printed label.
