Description:

An original British War Office military and air-navigation map of Berlin, Warsaw and the southern Baltic region, issued as North N.33 and part of N.34 in the Europe 1:1,000,000 series, G.S.G.S. 2758. This is the Second Edition, Army/Air Style, revised and photolithographed by the Ordnance Survey in 1944 and subsequently reprinted by the War Office in December 1946 in an edition of 8,000 copies, as confirmed by the printed production code 8000/12/46.

The sheet covers a strategically important area extending from Berlin eastwards across northern Germany and Poland to Warsaw, and northwards to the Baltic coast. It includes Stettin, Danzig/Gdańsk, Königsberg, East Prussia and the southern Baltic, together with the dense network of railways, principal and secondary roads, rivers, canals, lakes, settlements and administrative boundaries that defined the region in the closing phase of the Second World War and the immediate post-war period.

The map retains wartime and pre-1945 place-names, making it a particularly valuable cartographic record of central and eastern Europe immediately before and during the major territorial reorganisation that followed the defeat of Nazi Germany. Danzig, Königsberg and Stettin are shown under the names then in official use, before their post-war transformation into Gdańsk, Kaliningrad and Szczecin respectively.

The Army/Air Style format combines conventional topographical information with material intended for military and aviation use. Railways and roads are strongly delineated, water features are printed in blue, major communications are emphasised, and the lower margin retains the original height information, distance scales, positional-reference instructions, adjoining-sheet index and English glossaries of German and Polish geographical terms.

Of additional interest is the printed statement that the map is not to be considered an authority on the delimitation of international boundaries, reflecting the unstable political geography of the region during and immediately after the war.

G.S.G.S. 2758 formed part of the principal British small-scale military mapping programme for Europe. The Berlin–Warszawa sheet was one of the more strategically significant sheets in the series because it encompassed the German capital, occupied and post-war Poland, East Prussia and the principal communications corridors linking Germany with the eastern theatre.

Condition

Very good. Original issue folds with light handling, minor creasing and slight marginal wear consistent with military use and storage. The map remains complete and highly legible, with strong original blue, red and black printing and no significant loss.
